The Puppies Arrive!
It was a wild and exciting day! Zo seemed to be wanting to dig anytime we let her out, and so the signs of her being in labor began! I have four kids myself, so I definitely empathized with her. She had been awful clingy to me the whole pregnancy, so around 2:00 I decided to hang out with her in our sunroom. I could see her contractions and before I knew it there was a totally white puppy (still in the sack!) on the ground. Zo seemed tentative so I picked up the pup and broke the sack, she quickly licked him but he wasn’t breathing. I was able to clear the mucus out of his nose and mouth, rub his throat, and within a minute he was opening his mouth for air! SO AMAZING! Throughout the rest of the day and into the wee hours of July 4th she had the other 8 puppies, 9 in total.
Animals are amazing, but mother animals are something else entirely. This dog was our baby, our friend, our buddy, but through this labor and delivery she changed into a mother who knew just how to care for her babies. Despite the fact that she only has 8 teets, she quickly learned how to change positions and rotate the puppies so everyone could feed. I can’t say there’s a “runt” because they’re all so well cared for!
What a privilege!
